At least two people sustained gunshot wounds as anti-government demonstrations rocked Migori County on Monday.

While demonstrations in other parts of Migori remained peaceful, the two centers saw violence as police were forced to fire in the air and lob teargas to angry demonstrators.

“We had at least two patients admitted at Rongo sub-county hospital with bullet wounds. One had exit wound and the other the bullet was still lodged in the leg,” Maurice Otieno, the hospital’s medical superintendent said.

Otieno said the two received first aid treatment and were referred to Migori Referral Hospital.

There is fear that the number of those affected was at six as other are reported to have been taken to the nearby Rosewood Hospital in Rongo town.

“When demonstrators went to Kamagambo police station to seek on release of their colleagues police opened fire at the crowd where others were injured,” Jackson Otiang’a said.

Migori police commander Mark Wanjala told the press he was not aware of the incident.

Trouble started in Rongo as angry demonstrators converged at Nyarach center, where President William Ruto visited on Saturday.

The president visited Uriri town in Uriri constituency and Nyarach center in Rongo constituency hosted by rebel opposition legislators Mark Nyamita and Paul Abuor respectively.

Angry demonstrators chanted songs against their legislator Abuor calling him a traitor and burned his effigies.

In Uriri armed police were on high alert as angry youths carrying placards and twigs chanted against their legislator Nyamita and president Ruto, accusing them of high cost of living.

The group chanted “Nyamita Must Go!” “Ruto Must Go!” as they moved around the venue of the Saturday meeting.
