Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said the government will intensify traffic surveillance ahead of Easter.

In a statement on Monday, Murkomen said the National Transport and Safety Authority will ensure unroadworthy vehicles are not allowed.

"To curb these accidents, I directed NTSA to heighten surveillance to ensure unroadworthy vehicles are not allowed on our roads. I also called on both motorists and pedestrians to take the requisite precaution when using the roads, especially during this Easter period," he said.

The CS said he was informed on the number of road crashes in the first three months of 2023 which showed 1,072 lives have so far been lost.

He further congratulated the NTSA board, led by its Chair Aden Noor Ali, on their appointment and expressed the government's confidence in their ability to deliver on their mandate.

The number of people dying in road accidents is soaring ahead of Easter festivities, with over 20 killed in just three days.

After the Naivasha accident that killed 17 on Thursday, another five people perished after a matatu they were travelling in was crushed by a trailer on Saturday evening.

This was after NTSA numbers showed a reduction in fatalities since January to March.

NTSA said it is a decrease of 4.6 percent compared to last year's record for the same period.
