Shanderema and Agoro Sare shared spoils after a 1-1 draw in the second Pool 'A' match as the Kenya Secondary schools sports Association (KSSSA) entered Day Two in Kakamega.
Maxwell Wamalwa scored for Shaderema in the 37th minute before Geoffrey Omondi leveled in the 67th minute.
Wamalwa capitalised on Agoro Sare's Phelix Onyango’s poor ball control to slot home the ball after Kelly Madada's long pass into the box.
In another Pool 'A' fixture Kiragari bounced back from a 2-1 defeat to Agoro Sare on Tuesday to beat Khorof Harar from North Eastern 3-2. Harar have now conceded 13 goals in two matches after receiving eight from Shanderema on day one.
The results left Shanderema and Agoro Sare tied on four points ahead of Thursday’s final pool matches while Kiragari sit third with three points. Harar are last with zero points and have been eliminated from the championships.
Shanderema’s Kevin Asuba exuded confidence that they will top the pool after their last match. “We were in the celebration mood but that last-minute equaliser killed our spirit. However, we have a chance to redeem ourselves tomorrow,” said Asuba.
Agoro Sare’s Fredrick Akuku promised to score in Thursday's encounter with Khorof Harar.
“We know we will be playing a weaker side but this is not going to be a walk in the park. We must rise to the occasion considering the risks. Our target is to get maximum points against Harar and top the pool,” said Akuku.
In Pool 'B' fixtures, St Anthony’s Kitale were 2-0 winners over Coast’s Serani boys while Dagoretti beat Matiliku 2-0.
In girls’ matches defending champions Wiyeta battled from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw against Madira from Western.
Edna Wanda scored for Wiyeta in the 85th minute to cancel out Valarie Nekesa’s 2nd-minute goal.
Wiyeta coach Edgar Manyara said they have to work hard to top the pool in their last game on Thursday morning at the same venue.
“We really wanted this win to keep us on top but since we did not manage, we live to strike tomorrow,” said manyara.
His opponent Ibrahim Hussein said playing against champions was not a walk in the park but the focus now shifts to theri last match.
“We came here as second finishers but we have to prove a point that we are here to win. Our last match will be a do or die for us,” said Hussein.
In another Pool 'B' fixture Lwak Girls thrashed Mbitini 4-1.
In Pool 'A', Dagoretti overcame Njabini 2-1 in a highly contested battle while Butere humiliated Kombani 5-0.
In girls' volleyball, Kesogon from Rift Valley defeated Nyanza’s Nyakach 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-10), while African champions Kwanthanze beat Senior Chief in straight sets of 25-5, 25-2 and 25-3.
Soweto beat Vyambani 3-0 (11-25, 10-25, 14-25) as Mwitoti thrashed Karima in straight sets of (25-14, 25-13, 25-13).
In boys’ volleyball, new comers Andersen beat Ruthimitu 3- 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-19), Furaha lost in straight set to Tumaini (8-25, 10-25, 9-25) while national finalists Namwela beat Vitengeni 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-22). Tetu from Central beat Onjiko 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22).
