A stunning solo effort from USA defender Joe Scally with two minutes remaining snatched a 2-2 draw for Borussia Moenchengladbach at home against Mainz on Friday.
Gladbach scored first through Florian Neuhaus but Mainz scored in each half, first a spectacular strike from Brajan Gruda and then a solo effort from Aymen Barkok, to have a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes remaining.
Scally's late goal, just his second in 65 games with Gladbach, stole a point for his side, leaving Mainz winless after seven games.
Coming into the match after a first league win away at Bochum, Gladbach started with a flurry, Alassane Plea spurning two clear chances in the opening 20.
Neuhaus got Gladbach on the board shortly after, heading in a lofted cross from Franck Honourat.
Mainz hit back swiftly however, Gruda lashing a sublime shot high past Moritz Nicolas for the equaliser.
Chasing a first win of the season, Barkok gave Mainz the lead late, slaloming 40 metres past several defenders before blasting home with 15 minutes remaining.
With two minutes remaining, Gladbach's American defender Scally took it upon himself to equalise, shedding a defender on the penalty arc and slashing a dipping finish past a diving Robin Zentner.
The draw means Mainz are one of three winless teams and finish the night in second-last place, with just two points.
On Saturday, Union Berlin travel to Borussia Dortmund looking to break a run of six straight losses.
