President William Ruto says the government has completed the recruitment of 30,000 additional teachers to address the teacher-student ratio gap.
According to the Head of State, the government has provided adequate resources to ensure schools are well-equipped to accommodate all students as the transition from primary to junior secondary schools under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) continues.
“We have released Ksh.86 billion to ensure our children have items necessary when they resume school,” he added.
He was addressing faithful during a service at Deliverance Church International in Ruai, Nairobi County, on Sunday.
Junior Secondary School (JSS) students reported on Monday, January 30, although students in a majority of public schools were yet to kick off learning due to delay in the deployment of teachers to their new stations.
A spot-check revealed that most schools were waiting for teachers to report before learning can commence in the week beginning January 6, while those in private schools had already embarked on the curriculum.
On Saturday, TSC said it had posted over 30,000 teachers to public junior secondary schools across the country, and they’re expected to report by Monday, January 6.
The commission said counties likely to be the biggest beneficiaries include Kitui, which was to have a recruitment of 1,475 teachers, Kakamega (1,449), Nakuru (1,223), Bungoma (1,208), Meru (1,120) and Machakos (1,050).
Counties that will receive the least number of teachers in this recruitment plan include Isiolo expecting 119 teachers, Lamu (131), Samburu (175), Garissa (190), Marsabit (191), Mombasa (192), and Tana River (192).
In the long-term plan to mitigate the teacher shortage, TSC seeks to employ 90,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, as well as 21,550 interns.
A section of education stakeholders have however raised concerns over whether the number will suffice to meet the growing demand.
