The reason behind Lisandro Martinez’s substitution during Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Arsenal has been revealed.
On Sunday, United travelled to the Emirates Stadium looking to kickstart their season with a win over Arsenal.
United went ahead after 27 minutes courtesy of Marcus Rashford but Martin Odegaard levelled things up just one minute later.
Arsenal went on to score twice in injury time to seal a dramatic 3-1 victory. With 67 minutes on the clock, Erik ten Hag made the decision to take Martinez off, the Argentine was replaced by Harry Maguire.
The decision left fans baffled as Martinez did not look like he was injured when he came off the pitch.
However, the reason behind the substitution has now been revealed.
According to TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul, Martinez suffered a big knock during training 2-3 days before the match in the same area he had surgery on 2 months ago.
During the clash against Arsenal, he felt pain in the same area and therefore Ten Hag decided to take him off.
After the match, Ten Hag was asked about Martinez, he said: “Licha said he had a problem on his foot. But I'm not sure if it's an injury.“We have to wait, we have to see, we have to make the diagnosis.”On his team’s performance, Ten Hag said: “I think the performance is right from us. I think we played [a] very good game.
“But everything went against us and then, of course, then you don't win the game and if [we had] a little bit more luck, you win the game.”
United will be hope that Martinez has not suffered the same injury as they will need him to be fully fit if they are to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal this season.
After the international break, United will return to Premier League action against Brighton and Hove Albion.
