Former Kenya rugby sevens star Dennis Ombachi has called for patience among the rugby fans fraternity as the national sevens team undergoes a transitional phase.
The Shujaa are currently 12th in the World Sevens Series with 21 points from five outings and Ombachi believes the team has the quality to do better given time.
“At this point is all about taking baby steps this are young boys they are growing in to the game with the kind of technical bench they are working under they are in safe hands because they know how to mentor young players and turn them in to stars so let’s be patient,” Ombachi said.
With the likes of Kenyan great Collins Injera and Willis Ambaka joining the list of retired veterans, Ombachi is backing the country to produce new players that will go on to achieve global stardom.
“We had a coach called Paul True who used to tell us it is all about ticking the small boxes we should not expect them to wake up one day and win the tournament it has to start from somewhere all they need is our support and we will soon see the fruits of their hard work,” the former Mwamba player stated.
The next assignment for Shujaa is the Los Angeles Sevens where they are pooled in Group C alongside two-time Olympics winners Fiji, HSBC World series defending champions Australia and Japan.
The tournament will take place on February 25-26.
