Mushroom Casket Gains Ground as Sustainable Burial Alternative
A mushroom casket has been used for the first time in the United States, introducing a new eco-friendly choice for end-of-life arrangements. Made from mycelium—the root structure of mushrooms—this biodegradable casket breaks down naturally, enriching the soil instead of polluting it. The innovation, led by Dutch startup Loop Biotech, is catching attention as Americans search for greener burial methods that reduce their environmental footprint.
How the Mushroom Casket Works and Why It Matters
Unlike traditional wooden or metal caskets, which can take decades to decompose, a mushroom casket is designed to biodegrade within just 45 days after burial. Loop Biotech calls their version the “Living Cocoon,” and it’s grown entirely from mycelium in just seven days. Mycelium has already proven useful in sustainable packaging and even fashion, but its introduction into the death care industry signals a significant shift toward nature-positive practices. The casket not only composts efficiently but also actively contributes to healthy soil by filtering toxins as it breaks down.
The Story Behind the First Mushroom Casket Burial in the US
The first U.S. burial using a mushroom casket took place in June in Maine. It was a deeply personal affair, honoring a man who had always expressed his wish to “be buried naked in the woods.” That wish was fulfilled by his daughter, Marsya Ancker, with the help of Loop Biotech. Company founder Bob Hendrikx was present at the ceremony, which he called a meaningful milestone. The idea originated during his time at Delft University of Technology, where he was studying mycelium for sustainable housing. A conversation about death sparked the idea: “Why not make this a casket?”
Why Mushroom Caskets Represent the Future of Green Burials
With the rising popularity of natural burials and an increased focus on climate-conscious living, mushroom caskets are arriving at the perfect moment. Priced around $4,000, the Living Cocoon offers a practical yet symbolic way to return to the earth. It meets growing demand for alternatives to cremation and conventional burials, both of which have considerable environmental impacts. As more people seek out biodegradable casket options, Loop Biotech’s innovation might redefine what it means to leave a positive legacy—not just for loved ones, but for the planet itself.
