Hideki Matsuyama of Japan withdrew from the BMW Championship before starting his second round Friday at Olympia Fields (Ill) Country Club, citing a back injury.
Matsuyama was scheduled to tee off with Tom Hoge in the final tee time of the day after he opened the tournament on Thursday with a 1-over 71.
As a result, the 2021 Masters winner will not advance to the Tour Championship.
Matsuyama had qualified for the FedEx Cup playoff finale in each of the past nine seasons, which was the longest active streak of any player on tour.
Matsuyama, 31, entered the week No 47 in the FedEx Cup points standings and would have needed a high finish to crack the top 30 who will advance to next week at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
Matsuyama had a so-so 2022-23 season, making 20 cuts in 24 starts but earning just two top-10 finishes. He has not won since the Sony Open in Hawaii in January 2022.
