Sergio Reguilon is set to be confirmed as a Manchester United transfer deadline day signing with a loan move from Tottenham Hotspur - but with that, a golden Sir Alex Ferguson rule will be broken.
Erik ten Hag has made four signings so far this window with the acquisition of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund and, most recently, Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce.
Bayindir is the first transfer deadline day signing at Old Trafford and Reguilon is poised to be the second one in at United before the window slams shut at 11pm.
Reguilon is set to join United on loan for the season, after Ten Hag's side turned to the Spurs defender following a deal for Chelsea's Marc Cucurella being shelved.United have moved to sign Reguilon after suffering an injury crisis in the left-back department early this campaign.
The Old Trafford side has lost both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia to injury, meaning right-back Diogo Dalot has had to switch flanks and operate on the left.
United have not signed a player from Spurs in quite some time - and there is a very good reason why the Old Trafford club have tended to look elsewhere.
In the 2008 summer transfer window, United were involved in a pursuit of striker Dimitar Berbatov, who Ferguson wanted to add after winning the Premier League and Champions League.A lengthy transfer saga unfolded which went down to the final hours of the window as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy sought to acquire the biggest fee for the Bulgarian international.
Eventually, a deal worth £30.75 million was agreed for Berbatov, with Fraizer Campbell joining Spurs on loan for the season.
United had bought Michael Carrick from Spurs in 2006, but it was the Berbatov deal which, as things stand, was the last deal which saw a Tottenham player move to Old Trafford.
That will come to an end today after 15 years when Reguilon moves to United on loan for the season - and in doing so, the Old Trafford side will break a golden rule that Ferguson vowed after the complicated Berbatov deal.
Both the legendary former United boss and chief executive David Gill vowed they would never deal with the North London side again after the deadline day drama.
Reflecting on the saga, Ferguson once said: "That whole experience was more painful than my hip replacement."
