The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) launched investigations into a man's killing in Chuka on Saturday.

In a statement, the agency said it had already dispatched a response from its Meru regional office to the area to probe the death.

Upon conclusion of the investigations, IPOA says, it will take necessary action on anyone found to be responsible.

"The Authority shall take appropriate steps including recommending to the Director of public prosecutions the prosecution of any person found culpable," a  statement signed by Chairperson Ann Makori reads.

Makori noted that the Chuka police station commander had notified her office of the death which is in line with the National police service Act which states that any death be reported within 24 hours.

The statement by the agency comes a few hours after Interior cabinet secretary Kindiki Kithure announced that a team of detectives had been sent to the region to expedite investigations.

“Tonight, high-level investigative teams have been dispatched to Chuka Town to take over the inquiry and recommend legal action on those found responsible for the death of one person last week, as well as a second person, shot dead during the demonstrations that caused the blocking of the Embu- Meru Highway most of the afternoon today,” the CS stated.

While commiserating with the families, the CS said the law would not be lenient to anyone found guilty.

Transport was on Saturday afternoon paralysed along the Embu- Meru highway at Chuka Town after protesters blocked the road.

They were demonstrating over what they termed as extrajudicial killing.

They claimed after a trader was killed, police arrested two suspects only to release them.

In the process trying of dispersing them, police opened fire killing one.
