Keep your AirPods’ audio private when your iPhone connects to your car. Apple has introduced a simple new iOS 26 feature that ensures your wireless headphones remain the primary audio source, even when CarPlay or other Bluetooth devices are active.
If you’ve ever had your music or podcast suddenly switch from your AirPods to your car speakers, you’re not alone. This new iPhone setting fixes the problem in just a few taps, keeping your listening habits exactly where you want them.
Open your iPhone’s Settings app, then go to General > AirPlay & Continuity. Here, you’ll find the “Keep Audio with Headphones” option. Turning this on ensures that audio stays on your AirPods or other wireless headphones, even when your iPhone connects to CarPlay or Bluetooth speakers.
Activating this setting doesn’t lock you out of your car stereo. You can switch audio to your vehicle’s speakers anytime via Control Center or the CarPlay interface. All other CarPlay features remain fully functional while your iPhone prioritizes your headphones.
This feature is especially useful for anyone who frequently drives while listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or private calls. It prevents interruptions, keeps your audio private, and makes your iPhone’s audio experience smoother across multiple devices.
