Google Maps can tell Polestar 4 drivers when to merge lanes thanks to a new live lane guidance feature that combines AI, real-time data, and the car’s front-facing camera. The feature detects lane markings and road signs, offering visual and audio cues to guide drivers smoothly through traffic or upcoming exits. Initially available in the U.S. and Sweden, this innovation gives Polestar 4 drivers a futuristic driving assistant directly integrated into Google’s navigation ecosystem.
The new Google Maps feature uses the Polestar 4’s built-in cameras and Google’s AI to understand real-time road conditions. When approaching an intersection, highway exit, or lane split, the system shows a highlighted lane on the dashboard and provides voice instructions to help drivers merge seamlessly. This reduces last-minute lane changes, improving safety and confidence on busy roads.
Polestar’s infotainment system runs on Google’s Android Automotive OS, making it easier for Google Maps to integrate advanced features like live lane guidance. Polestar has long partnered with Google to include services such as Google Assistant, Chrome, and HD Maps directly into its cars. Google plans to expand this feature to other vehicles once performance and data feedback from Polestar 4 users prove successful.
While the rollout begins with Polestar 4 models, Google hinted that live lane guidance could expand to other vehicles running Android Automotive OS in the near future. The company is focusing on refining accuracy through AI-driven updates, making it likely that brands like Volvo and GM — which also use Android Automotive — will benefit next. For now, Polestar 4 drivers get an early taste of what could become the standard for intelligent, camera-assisted navigation.
