Gold medalists from the recently concluded World Athletics Championships in Budapest have been rewarded with Sh2mn each, meaning Kipyegon got double because of her two victories in the 1500m and 5,000m, while Mary Moraa pockets a whooping Sh2mn.
The silver medalists (Emmanuel Wanyonyi (800m), Beatrice Chepkoech (3000m steeplechase), Daniel Simiu (10,000m) were rewarded Sh1.5mn each while the bronze medalists (Beatrice Chebet (5000m), Faith Cherotich (3000m steeplechase), Jacob Krop (5000m), Abraham Kibiwot (3000m steeplechase) were rewarded Sh1mn each.
Meanwhile, all the finalists were awarded Sh50,000 each. In total, the government has splashed Sh21.6mn for the Budapest team, with all coaches also set to be rewarded from the total.
Meanwhile, recently crowned African Women’s Volleyball Champions Malkia Strikers have been awarded with a total of Sh4.45mn, which will cover payments to the 14 players that were in Cameroon as well as the coaching team.
A total of Sh2.8mn will go to the players, meaning each receives Sh200,000, while the rest will be split among the coaching team.
Also rewarded was the Kenyan team that competed at the Fourth Africa Beach Games in Hammamet, Tunisia. A total pack of Sh3.28mn will be dished out to the team.
The handball team which clinched silver will earn Sh1.5mn, the basketball team also gets rewarded with Sh600,000 after winning silver, meaning each player receives Sh150,000, Mark Omumasaba who won silver in wrestling gets Sh500,000, Mathayo Mahabila (bronze) gets Sh300,000 while Shufaa Changaway and Faith Urasa who also won silver in tennis will get Sh200,000 each.
Their coaches will also be rewarded.
Also, the Kenyan team that competed at the Youth Commonwealth Games will be rewarded with a total of Sh3mn. The gold medalists will get Sh350,000 each. Kipkurui Sang and Nancy Cherop who came back home with two gold medals will earn Sh700,000 each. The silver medalists will earn Sh250,000 each while all the finalists will earn Sh25,000 each.
This is the first time that winning teams have been rewarded with cash incentives by the government. Previously, only athletes who won medals at the World Championships and the Olympic Games were rewarded.
