Donny van de Beek turned down moves away from Manchester United this summer, it has been claimed.
The 26-year-old, who has not made a competitive start for United since January, has been linked to moves to Galatasaray and Fenerbahce ahead of the Turkish Super Lig’s transfer window shutting on Friday.
However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed it was likely the Netherlands international would remain at United for the first half of the season, having not been enthused by the prospect of a move to Turkey.
Speaking to the United Stand, Romano explained: “There is a very good chance Donny will stay until January because he doesn’t want to make a move just to be away for six or seven months and then return. This is not his style.
“Also if he wanted to go to Turkey he had the possibility to go, but he wanted to play Champions League football. He had that possibility, but now it’s no longer the case as the Champions League [squad] list has already closed in Turkey.“So I think at the moment this Donny story with Turkey is not that concrete. There was a possibility a couple of weeks ago but the player was not so keen on that kind of move, so I expect him to stay.”
Van de Beek joined United in a £39million transfer from Ajax back in 2020 but has made just 60 first-team appearances since providing two goals and two assists in that time.
And while the midfielder has appeared to have become an outcast at Old Trafford in the past few months, an unofficial United media account The Muppetiers has claimed Van de Beek “has turned down moves all summer”.Romano, however, reported that the player had been close to a move to La Liga side Real Sociedad, only for United to pull out of the deal.
The Italian journalist added: “Let me say that with Real Sociedad the deal was really close at one point, and it collapsed because of Manchester United. That’s the reality because Donny agreed on everything with Real Sociedad.
“He wanted to go there. It was probably the best opportunity for the player to change city, country, league, to experience something different and to play Champions League football.
“He wanted to go there by Man Utd didn’t agree with Real Sociedad on the terms of the deal [with regards to] the loan fee and salary coverage.”
