Fans of classic handheld gaming have reason to celebrate—the Chromatic Game Boy is getting Tetris’ best multiplayer mode. ModRetro is updating its modernized handheld to bring back the iconic Battle Mode, a feature that originally made Tetris on the Game Boy a global phenomenon.
Since its 2024 launch, the Chromatic has shipped with its own licensed version of Tetris. Players could already connect two handhelds with a Link Cable for competitive matches. But now, the new Battle Mode takes things further by allowing direct player interaction, something many fans have been asking for since day one.
In Battle Mode, clearing lines doesn’t just benefit you—it sabotages your opponent. Each time a player reduces their Tetris stack, their rival’s board fills with “garbage lines” at the bottom. These lines contain random gaps, making it harder to clear rows and pushing both players into high-stakes showdowns.
This was one of the most beloved features of the original Nintendo Game Boy version of Tetris, and its return on the Chromatic brings a wave of nostalgia with modern polish.
The update will be available through the handheld’s Cart Clinic feature, which allows existing Chromatic users to upgrade their Tetris cartridges without buying a new game. That means anyone who already owns the Chromatic can jump right into Battle Mode and relive one of Tetris’ most legendary multiplayer experiences.
With this update, ModRetro is proving once again that the Chromatic is more than just a nostalgic throwback—it’s a carefully crafted reimagining of one of gaming’s greatest handhelds. By adding Tetris’ best multiplayer mode, the Chromatic strengthens its appeal for both retro enthusiasts and modern players looking for fast-paced, competitive fun.
