President William Ruto's cabinet on Tuesday endorsed the construction of a new 60,000-capacity stadium in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.
This comes after Kenya was awarded the right to host the prestigious Continental Cup in 2027.
"The Cabinet endorsed the construction of a new 60,000-capacity stadium in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027," a statement from State House read.
Kenya had submitted a joint bid together with Uganda and Tanzania titled ‘Pamoja bid’ which beat bids from Botswana, Senegal and Egypt.
Sports CS, Ababu Namwaba had also earlier handed over the construction and renovation of stadia in the country to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in preparation for the tournament.
The stadiums to be renovated included the Nyayo International Stadium, Moi Stadium Kasarani and Kipchoge Keino Stadium as well as the construction of a new football-only stadium dubbed Talanta Stadium.
Neighboring Tanzania have also stated plans to construct new stadiums in the build-up to the continental tournament.
