Brest's sporting director Gregory Lorenzi has revealed why the club turned down the chance to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.
The 21-year-old secured a deadline day move away from Old Trafford as he joined Getafe on a season-long loan.
The La Liga team have officially unveiled Greenwood, who has been welcomed by the club's fans.
He's trained with his new teammates ahead of potentially making his debut after the international break.
A host of clubs rejected the opportunity to acquire the forward as The Athletic claim Brentford declined the chance to snap him up.Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund as well as Serie A duo AS Roma and AC Milan opted out of signing the Englishman, too. Saudi Pro League clubs also distanced themselves from the player.
Not to mention Ligue 1 outfit Brest, who were approached over the transfer of Greenwood before he penned a deal at Getafe.
However, the top flight French club dismissed the idea of luring him to the Stade Francis Le Ble.The club's sporting director claims Brest was offered Greenwood but turned down the opportunity to sign him due to the 'controversy' and the 'salary'.
"I was offered Greenwood, who Manchester United sacked for a non-sporting matter," he said via Get French Football News. "But between the controversy and the salary, we didn’t consider following it up for a second."Getafe eventually swooped in for Greenwood, securing his services for the 2023/24 campaign.
His last competitive appearance came in Man United's 1-0 win over West Ham United on January 20, 2022.
Greenwood, though, could be in contention to make his Getafe debut when they resume their league campaign on September 17 against Osasuna.
