You will now have up to seven days to use data bundles earned by redeeming bonga points, Safaricom has announced. 

Through its re-updated terms and conditions, Safaricom now wants its customers to use up the data bundles within the specific timelines.

"Bonga data bundles of up to 1 gigabyte expires at midnight on the day of purchase," the statement read. 

Similarly, talk time minutes and airtime will also expire effective after seven days of redeeming. 

"For the 4,000 Bonga points redeemed, the 280 talk time minutes expire 7 days after the day of purchase," Safaricom said. 

SMS of up to 1,000 counts will last for a period of 24 hours, while 3,500 counts will expire after 30 days. 

In November 2022, Safaricom announced all Bonga Points older than three years will expire and will be unavailable for redemption from January 1, 2023. 

All subscribers who fell in the category were advised to hasten their Bonga points redemption to avoid incurring losses upon the set date for expiry.

"We have noticed that they are usually dormant hence becoming a liability to us if unclaimed,” Safaricom said.

The move was aimed at unlocking the underlying revenue amounting to  Sh4.5 billion as of March 2022. 

The Bong points are earned as a result of airtime top-ups by subscribers.

Subscribers usually earn one Bonga point for every Sh10 spent on the Safaricom network on voice, mobile data and SMS, and for every Sh100 spent on the network for M-Pesa transactions.

For one to enjoy the Bonga points, one must be enrolled on the programme.

The Bonga points can be converted to free airtime, free internet, and paying bills.
