Artificial intelligence is transforming the healthcare industry — but not always for the better. A new 2025 healthcare study warns about the hidden dangers of AI at work, revealing how racial bias can quietly influence medical decisions. Researchers tested four major large language models (LLMs)—ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and NewsMes-15—across ten psychiatric cases. The findings were troubling: when a patient’s race was implied or stated, these AI models often recommended inferior treatments.
This shows a growing concern within healthcare systems that now depend heavily on AI for diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring. With over 65% of U.S. hospitals using AI-driven tools, even subtle bias can have life-changing effects on patients’ outcomes.
AI tools in healthcare are praised for speed, accuracy, and predictive insights. However, this study reveals that these same tools can amplify existing inequities. To reduce the risks of AI bias in healthcare and beyond, transparency and accountability are crucial. Companies should conduct independent audits of AI tools, disclose how decisions are made, and involve experts in ethics and equity during AI development.
